Monoterpenols

The first of the alcohol chemical families is monoterpenols. Fairly similar to monoterpenes only with an added OH (hydroxyl/alcohol) group added on. The location of this hydroxyl group is what determines the therapeutic benefit (oh chemistry you make life fun!). The shelf life on these oils is also longer due to the additional group around 3-5 years.

Known chemical constituents within the Monoterpenol family and their know therapeutic benefits:

Linalol- anti-infectious, antispasmodic, CNS sedative

Geraniol- antifungal

Menthol- antispasmodic, carminative

Terpinen-4-ol- anti-infectious

Essential Oils high in Monoterpenols, with approximate percentages of monoterpenols and their known therapeutic benefits:

Safety information related to this family:

With Rose absolute (Rosa damascena) having emmenagogue action please limit or avoid it especially early in pregnancy or if you are trying to conceive. There is some debate as to whether or not emmenagogue oils will cause issues/ stop a pregnancy from implanting.

With Neroli (Citrus aurantium var. amara) - this oil is often adulterated, please only order this when you know the oil has been analyzed (like by GC/MS) to ensure it is a pure oil. Remember in the US an oil only needs to have 5% of the oil in it to be labeled as “pure”.

With Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)- this oil is often also adulterated, it has been noted that previously as much as 300 times more tea tree has been sold versus how much was produced. Also tea tree could cause skin sensitization in some people, when using topically make sure to use with a skin nourishing oil or carrier.
