Topical Maximums

As I begin writing this the first thing that comes to mind is how many people are unaware that certain essential oils have recommendations for what dilutions should be used topically. These are recommendations above the normal concerns for age, health, and reason for blending. These recommendations come from the oils themselves and their potential to harm the user. The recommendations you are about to see come mainly from Tisserand and Young’s Essential Oil Safety Second Edition. This is because they took some serious time reviewing research to come to the conclusions they did for these recommendations.

I also have pin-able pictures for you all to be able to have on hand when you go to use these essential oils. These were created by a great friend of mine Kristen- she is my right hand when it comes to graphics so I know you will enjoy them.

There are many reasons for each oil to have a topical maximum; these include: sensitization, UV issues, and concerns with a specific component of the oil. For example the Thujone content is the concern with lanyana (Artemisia afra) essential oil. Thujone is banned as a food additive in the US. It also has restrictions in the EU and Canada; it is regulated due to it being neuro-toxic. Because of this even dermal applications are recommended to have a maximum because of it still getting into your system. This is just one example of the many that you will see on these infographics. If you want to know more about a specific oil and why it has a maximum you should really consider grabbing yourself a copy of Tisserand and Young’s Essential Oil Safety 2nd Edition. I know you have seen me post about it many, many times; this is a great book to have to reference the essential oils you use. It also is a great way to start to better understand the chemistry as it relates to the oils. Feel free to contact me if you have any concerns or questions and I can help you out.
